I was watching Seinfeld (for the hundredth time) last night and George Costanza’s perspective on visiting the doctor’s office really resonated with me. Watch this for 35 seconds to see what I mean: George at the Doctor
It’s the last lines that slay me- JERRY: He’s a doctor. You gotta pay what he says. GEORGE: Oh, no, no, no. I pay what I say.
Don’t we all feel this way?
People are often surprised when I advise them to try to negotiate with their doctors. We are so accustomed to our health plan having done all that work already- which is great.
But sometimes our need for care falls outside of the box, unfortunately. Sometimes we might want to consult with a physician who is either outside of our ‘network’, or maybe even doesn’t take insurance. Or maybe we just want something that isn’t ‘covered’ right now. When that happens I encourage you to ADVOCATE FOR YOURSELF. If a bill seems high- ask for a discount. Can you pay cash up front? I have a client that was just told they could get a 40% discount on services if they paid cash.
So next time you’re at the doctor and you are surprised by the number you hear- think like George Costanza and ask for a discount!
Then kindly pay the bill.
