More Traditional Dental Insurance… with elements of a PPO. DPO Plans either work one of two ways: They either incentivize you to choose the Preferred Providers, or they penalize you for not choosing the Preferred Providers.
An incentivizing plan will provide a traditional 80%/20% Plan for visiting ANY Dentist, but will increase the coverage to 90% or even 100% if you visit someone from the Preferred list of Dentists. These types of plans will be VERY expensive. A penalizing plan works the opposite, and provides you the traditional 80%/20% coverage if you visit one of the Preferred Dentists, and reduce the coverage to 60% or 50% if you go outside of the Network. Obviously, these types of plans will be more affordable.
Like with the PPO Plans for Health, DPO Plans have the benefit of allowing you to self-direct your coverage and see whichever Dentist you wish to see. If you can afford the Out-of-Network charges, you can actually see anyone you wish.
The big difference between Dental Plans and Health Plans though is there are a much higher percentage of Dentists who don’t accept limited payments than there are of Doctors, so it’s might be harder to find a Dentist in your Network.
Unless you can’t afford it, or have a Dentist in a DMO Plan that you like, you will probably prefer to choose a DPO Plan.
